We’ve been listening to “Nada Especial” by 99dosmil non-stop this week. A friend of mine who knows I write for Zilla shared them with me with the intent of getting them a review. He was right; while we usually cover shoegaze, this quality of a rock album is undeniable. It is heartfelt, sincere, and above all, it’s fun.
With its catchy melodies, powerful instrumentation, and a reminder that creating music is always a worthwhile endeavor, this record is starting to hold a special place in my heart.
This record is perfectly balanced, full of heartfelt lyrics and appropriate choruses that make us want to sing, and it's not overly produced. By intercalating their songs, both singers give the record a distinct tempo that has ups and downs and resembles a conversation.
The way that “Nada especial” manages pacing is excellent. The same is true of dynamics; even on the more depressing songs, like “Heladera,” we are able to connect emotionally, which allows us to rise higher with the closing tracks, “Chica Neurotica” and “Ahora son Trans.”
What a gem of an album. We won’t shut up about it for a while. Keep going 99dos mil, you’ll go far.
